What is Internet of Things?
It is a network of physical and virtual things all of them will have their unique ID and are capable of sensing and performing computational tasks. The term was first used by Kevin Ashton and the concept emerged from ubiquitous computing. According to ubiquitous computing, every object around us will be a computer and will have the sensing capability.
According to experts, more than 50 billion objects will become a part of internet of things world by the year 2020. What’s even more interesting is the fact that every object and device on the IoT network can communicate with not only human but also with other devices in the network.
Technology and Working
Internet of things relies on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. All the objects are identifiable through their smart tags or ID with the help of RFID technology. Each object is capable of sensing information, communicating information to humans or other devices on the network and can also take a programmed action based on the situation. This makes IoT an ideal choice for many applications.
Major applications of IoT can be divided into four main categories
Personal applications are mainly focused toward health care while the utilities applications include power grid, nuclear facilities and other sensitive installations of any nation. Factories and mills come under the enterprise applications and they use IoT for security purposes. Mobile applications of IoT are making everything possible but there are security risks attached to it as well.
Drawbacks and its Solutions
As with every technology, IoT also have some disadvantages. One of the biggest problems with IoT is security issues. Secondly, privacy is also a major concern for the public whose data is being transmitted wirelessly. Thankfully, there are many other ways to overcome these IoT related issues. Onion routing, transport layer security and virtual private network are some of the solution to eliminate the security and privacy concerns to a certain degree.
Even though, this technology is in its recent stages but the future looks extremely bright for internet of things and related applications. It is time that we embrace the technology and do everything effectively by automating all our routine tasks. Looking at the immense potential this technology has many technology giants such as Intel, Samsung and CISCO has started working on it. We are not far away from the day when our chair, table and door will be a capable computer.
